I recently sold my MK2 Golf with 289,000 miles. Those little 1.8 8v motors will run forever! My Subaru (Legacy GT) is still in my garage with a spun rod bearing, partially torn apart. My Jetta will be replacing it in the garage (once I fix the Legacy) to do timing belt/water pump/blahblahblah.
yeah it was 375 (or that was the "around that" price he gave me when he called, so before taxes I think) for mine. that was two new ones for the front and then he machined a lot of the rust from the rear ones. And an oil change. I wish I could do all this stuff myself, but oh well.

When your dash lights start coming on, just unhook the battery for a few seconds. That will shut it up for a few miles. They will at least stay out long enough to reset the radio stations. #teamwomandriver
I got a new (well new for me) car last week. 2010 Toyota Corolla. Really nice metallic blue color. I think I got a bargain. It has a few scratches, which I plan to touch up. Also the brakes are definitely worn - I can feel them when I brake. I'm going to take it in for a really good going-over soon, but there's nothing in how it runs or sounds that worries me. I'm going to be changing garages for this vehicle. I liked our previous mechanic, but it was too far away and inconvenient. I've got some recommendations for the new place I'll be taking it to, which is within walking distance from my place, which is nice.
Looks like a writing one. Think of it this way though, Each rotor is $35, that's $140 for parts (assuming they're not doing pads, which is unlikely. If they are, that's another $40-$60 in parts). Then they have to put your car in the air, remove the wheels, take the bolts of the calipers, remove the pads, unbolt the rotor, bolt the new rotor in, put the new pads in, turn in the caliper piston (by hand), mount the caliper, mount the wheel, and test functionality... four times. It's a lot of tedious labor for something that's really important for your vehicle.
Yep, I totally have a lot of respect for the labor. I have friends who know how to switch out their own but they have the tools and know how. edit: I had to laugh because I didn't even know what part the rotors were until I saw my new ones on there and thought "ahhhh, those rusted things I could see through the tire... those must have been the rotors!!!" Since there were now silver things there instead lol
The initial investment can be a lot for tools. I know I have at least a month's worth of my current salary into tools over my lifetime, and that's nothing compared to some of my friends.
A lot of new cars have it where you can't even do any work on them yourself. Not even simple things like change spark plugs or oil. My husbands work upgraded to new trucks, and they can't even check the oil because they don't have dip sticks. And they have to go to the Dodge dealership to change the battery because you can't just change them out yourself, they have to be hooked up to the computer. The main reason I don't want to trade in my car for a new one because if something happens you're pretty much stuck using a shop. I didn't marry a grease monkey for nothing.
Luckily my gf works at a rock quarry and the mechanic there did it for free because he was like I'm not doing anything I can have it done in an hour. So I spent a little over 100 bucks for 2 rotors and 4 brake pads.
I'm just really glad my brother taught me how to work on my own car! I kept my Saturn running for 212k miles before we bought something bigger (another Saturn, but an SUV this time) and I'm keeping it running for my husband at 190k currently. I can do all my own minor maintenance and most repairs that don't involve dismantling the engine. The most involved thing I've ever done was replace a cam cover gasket. But replacing bad sensors, fluid changes, brakes, etc, I do all of that myself and I'm so grateful.
if you have any u pull it type places around you, you can pick up used tools for cheap. also when you're out in the yard, you can pick up things that people leave behind. Its like a treasure hunt for my husband.
I'd tell him to stuff it and I'd sign up anyway. Ok not exactly how it would go, but I think for 25.00 that's kind of silly since you will then have to pay more. You can always make it up after. edit: I think it's the "said I have to" part that made me prickly. Can tell I've been the sole decision maker in our house for 3 years now. No one tells me how to spend the money lol
