Hi, Reading the guidelines of crowdsurf's transcription jobs, I'm unclear about math HITs. If the speaker says "If x were equal to 1" do I type "If x = 1"? Similarly if they say "If three were to be divided by four" do I type "If 3 / 4" ?
I have read crowdsurf's style guide. From what I understand, we replace "is equal to" with "=", but in this case, it's past tense, hence my post. If following the guide strictly I would surely type "3 were to be / 4", but something doesn't feel right about that.
Oh I get what your trying to say now. Well if you've read through the guide and it doesn't say anything about past tense with Math, the next step would be is to just note it in your transcription file somewhere as taking your best guess at what was said or just asking Crowdsurf flat out how you do it. My guess would still be 3 / 4. I don't think it matters if it's past or present tense.
Thanks for the idea. Another not completely unrelated question, since I don't want to start a new thread, how liberal are you transcribers in using commas? If there's a half-second pause, do you throw the comma in? If they're pausing five times in a sentence, do you have a bunch of ugly commas? Also, if they say "Also I like to dance" really fast, do you stick the comma in after "Also"?
Generally if they pause in a sentence, I usually don't use commas. The only reason I use commas for the most part is for the reason in the first sentence of this post. As for the also, I usually stick a comma in there. It just depends.
