Okay, I totally take back the part about the consent. I just went back to the HIT and it lets me preview the beginning which says:

The purpose of this research is to study online crowdsourcing tasks. After a brief tutorial, you will look for planets in astronomical light curve data by examining the brightness of stars. You may choose how much work you will do for this task, and the time required for this task will vary depending on your work. You will be paid a bonus for the amount of work you do and the amount of this bonus will be displayed to you and updated continually once the task starts.

No risks are expected from your participation in this research. Your participation is voluntary and you may refuse to participate or withdraw at any time without penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled by returning this HIT. You may also choose to submit the HIT at any time to earn the base reward plus your earned bonus so far. You will always be paid for good-faith, non-spam work. Your work will be kept anonymous and research results will be aggregated and described in summary.

If you have questions or concerns about this research, or would like to be contacted regarding research results, please contact Andrew Mao, mao@seas.harvard.edu. For any other questions, concerns, suggestions, or complaints about research-related harm, you may also contact the Committee on the Use of Human Subjects in Research at Harvard University, 1414 Massachusetts Avenue, Second Floor, Cambridge, MA, 02138. Phone: 617-496-2847, or email: cuhs@fas.harvard.edu.

Please print or save a copy of this page for your records.

In that case, it totally does sound like a study. Googled the requester and found this: http://www.andrewmao.net/. He has several posts there about using MTurk.

    Nope its this one:

Quality score 1.1 - AutoGranted on Request is less than 13

And it says I can't qualify for it again.Don't get it.

Nope. I think we were just helping out Andrew Mao and his graduate studies at Harvard.

This guy rejected my work for "completing it too fast." I'm new to this place, is there somewhere to downrate him? He's a scammer.

Haha, same here! I told myself, "they are compiling everyone's data, I'm helping." But still, whatever the actual study was about, I'm sure we helped. And hey, we got some coinage from it. :)

I haven't rated anyone yet, myself, but whenever you see "Good TO" or "No TO" or anything like that, they are referring to the scores here: www.turkopticon.differenceengines.com. If you didn't already know/have it, you can install a plug in to show their TO scores on the mturk page. :)

The way I see it it's perfectly normal for us to talk about pay and bonus incentives of hits. No one knew, that the bonus pay was part of the research, until we started comparing here why some thought it was great others thought it was horrible and saw the differing pays.

I don't think we can be held responsible for that. Must we stop ever discussing bonuses on all hits just in case it's part of the research?

They should be auto grant quals so they grant as soon as you request them. There are 3 in addition to the adult qualification.

Ah yes thanks. I had been wondering what "TO" stood for though I had surmised it was some sort of rating system. I downloaded that JUST to leave that guy a negative review.

This one was kind of different then most I have seen. I just read the beginning and correlated the extra pay bonus to part of his research which felt like a no-no to discuss. Which is why I left a reply way earlier that made little sense because I didn't want to give that bit away lol.
