Try getting out of bed for about 15 or 20 minutes. Watch TV or read or whatever for that time. Then, get back in bed and try to fall asleep. This advice might sound a bit counterintuitive, but it works for me sometimes.

If you still can't go to sleep after a while, try not to think about it too much. Just relax and think of it this way: even though you're not technically sleeping, you are resting (by just remaining very still and closing your eyes).

Also there is so much footage you'll likely never run out.

If you do manage to run out, though, there's always Carson debate footage.

The only way I can sleep is in complete darkness with a fan so close to my head it blocks out any possible noise from anything else.

I've tried using earplugs and masks but they bother the fuck out of me.

I get up, sit at the desk, turn on the computer, and play a few games of solitaire. Just enough to distract myself from whatever is running through my head but not something that requires real attention. (I've got up and panda'd mylikes for 15 minutes too!) Works surprisingly often. The sleep experts would probably be horrified, but it is the best thing I've found.

I once had a sleep test done. Didn't sleep at all. Zero. Did not help that they expect you to sleep in a strange room, at their hours (not even close to my schedule), and covered in wires and tubes and shit.

They then tried a second sleep test, done after my being awake for 24 hours straight. They then gave me an Ambien. And... I stared at the ceiling for 6 hours before getting maybe an hour of bad sleep. I never even bothered going back to the sleep doctor for the "results".

I am convinced if they'd let me get out of bed and roam the halls for 10 minutes or something before trying again, it would have gone better.
