I had to look up "sahm", and thought this was so cool I had to share it(props to desertsky!):

    stay-at-home mom

Stay-at-home moms are women who choose to make raising their children and caring for their home their full-time job. Many factors are involved in this decision, including the potential benefits to the child or children, the woman's desire to be in the workplace versus the home, and the economics of forfeiting the woman's income.

According to the website www.salary.com, the average wage that would have been earned by a woman performing the multiple tasks of a stay-at-home mom — if she did them outside the home — in 2006 is $143,121. Those jobs are housekeeper, daycare center teacher, cook, computer operator, laundry machine operator, janitor, facilities manager, van driver, CEO, and psychologist.

To keep this in perspective, consider the fact that the US Census Bureau puts the median annual income of a woman who has a bachelor's degree and works full-time at $39,818.

In the salary.com study, stay-at-home moms reported working 91.6 hours a week.
