Can anybody tell me where I can get the Dragon Naturally Speaking for dirt cheap prices. I can't afford the $100 price listed on their website. Thanks.

There are open-source free ones.. But I warn you do not use it for transcription hits.
You can tell when the software did one.

I managed a bootleg of dragon and tried to talk what I was hearing to help me scribe faster but in the end it doesn't really speed things up at all. Just do it the right way and keep at it and you will improve =)

Hold on.... did you not bother to even read what you quoted? I clearly said
"in the end it doesn't really speed things up at all."

But I'm reading such great reviews about Dragon that it has created a great revolution in Speech to text softwares. Are they all false claims.

If you have it programmed near perfectly to a SPECIFIC voice it works well. However you cannot just use it on random voices since it has to learn each voice.

Wow, I want to believe your words as the gospel truth. so do you mean that it's of no use in transcribing speechink verbatim hits? And if I program it to recognize my voice only, will it work perfectly for me? Thanks.

I'm just too paranoid, if there is money involved in buying some stuff like the Dragon software. It's better to ask than to lose money.

The way Dragon works is you have to dictate this booklet of control words and sentences to the program, so that it "learns" to recognize your speech patterns. You have to do this process for each user, it won't work at all for transcription work.

It works for me. But I'm not talking about holding it up to the speaker and cheating. I'm talking about playing a chunk of audio, pausing it, un-muting my mic, dictate the chunk of audio(having to also dictate punctuation), repeat. Of course there are things like speaker labeling that I go back and do manually because it is just simpler. Even so, I am such a slow typist that it makes my overall time faster. I would only recommend it for slow typists. It will never be as fast a a fast typist, but it works out for me.

It does speed things up for me. I've tried both ways.

That actually works out quite well since I only have one voice.

OK. I am going to chime in here. Sorry about the caps that are now coming:

DON'T TRY TO USE DNS FOR TRANSCRIPTION.

DON'T TRY IT UNLESS YOU WANT TO GET VERY VERY BANNED

End of caps. I've done scores of transcriptions, in MTurk and in real life. I had DNS for other reasons and tried it as an experiment in real life. it does not work for transcription hits - you will simply waste time.

Learn to type well (try keyboard.com), learn to listen, study the style guides - every requester has a different one. Print out the guides and examples, keep them in a binder, remind yourself to read them every time you switch requesters or take a couple of days off. Do the hits honestly and you will improve.
Transcription is a good skill to have in the real world, but DNS is NOT NOT NOT going to help in any meaningful way.

I know I sound pedantic, but let me repeat once again: save your money. Don't try to do them with DNS.

Yes. That is what the guy that started this thread I think was trying to do. Even though we all suggest he not I bet he will be banned from scribing in no time most likely.. Can't people just for once in their life NOT be lazy...

Dear Lord child, do not apologize for your caps rant. Seriously. Thank you for being a voice of reason here.

Do you people not realize that if you can use automated transcribing software to do transcription HITs, you can wave goodbye to your paychecks? Holy shit. Then you'll be all over MY HITs and that does not sit well with me. Do your fucking job and don't be lazy.
