I find some HITs are very vague and it does not appear to be with any purpose. Say for example a HIT in which youhave to identy teh number of feet in the picutre. What could th epurpose of such a HIT be?

If I could only tell you how many HITS I've done where I wondered...."what on earth purpose can this possibly serve?" Sometimes, you just have to laugh, say "now there's a weird one", and collect the $$ lol.

LOL I have often wondered what purpose some of this could serve, but I figure if they pay me for it, then ....ok by me!

I don't think all the hits have some purpose because some request hits for fun

yeah I'm sure some are just for personal enjoyment but most have a pretty clear use, even if you're not sure where they will be used.

I had a funny one today, a guy requested the licence plate read from a picture he had. OBviously he wanted to track some guy down.

Problem was, there was no way to digitally enhance the photograph enough to make out a plate which was only comprised of about 100 pixels!

Shame though, the reward was $5 and if it was POSSIBLE, I could have done it in under 10 minutes.

There's one sitting on there now where a guy wants you to record yourself imitating a vicious dog on camera. I can't possibly imagine WHY he wants that, but it's been there for almost a week now and no one's taken him up on it.

There could be many people who have taken him up on it. When it says there's one HIT available, that doesn't always mean there's one job for one person. Requesters can specify, for example, that they want 100 people to do the HIT, with each person allowed to do the HIT once.

So if that's the case here, the vicious dog HIT will stick around until enough different people do their one allowed HIT or the HIT expires.

I saw that one and laughed too. I though now if you could work Mturk under 18 that would have been taken in minutes :D

I saw that one too! I've considered taking him up on it - the reward is pretty good and he only wants like 10 seconds.

I like to do the ".15 cents in 15 seconds" hit where you google Vonage- what the heck is this for? It seems to pay pretty well for a spammy hit. I guess he makes money somehow as he posts these hits nearly every day.

Hmmm I guess while there're a few people who do post HITs for fun (maybe they have too much money and don't know how to spend it =p), I'd think the ones mentioned here do serve some purpose (except maybe for the vicious dog ones).

Those HITs that involve counting the number of objects, drawing boxes around objects and labelling objects (i.e. the MTlabel HITs) are (I think) used to 'train' computer systems how to recognise these objects - maybe it's some neural network thingy or something ... I dunno =p

They are trying to "run down" the advertising budget of the people offering this service - so they are most likely a direct competitor.

    Not all.
Some don't have sence, but they give money.
Most of them have a purpose, they help the requesters to achieve their goal.
