If you didn't swallow any blood, then it could be a tear in your esophagus or something more serious like an ulcer or pancreatitis. I would say don't risk it.

A lot or a little? Do you take medication like Advil on an empty stomach? What prompted the throwing up? Sometime stuff you throw up, like popcorn or corn chips, will scratch the esophagus and cause a little blood, but if you suddenly had the urge to puke and have not been eating hard pointy things and there was more than just a couple drops of blood , I would treat as an emergency. Bleeding from the intestinal tract is no bueno. Sorry

I'm guessing that the cause of the heartburn is the cause of the blood.

For the guys in he group to know: if you have heartburn and take tums or anti acid and it doesn't lessen, you need to go to the ER. Heartburn is a classic sign of heart attack.. Especially in men. I had a dear friend drop dead at the table after ignoring heart burn that "just wouldn't go away".
