Hi, I just found out about turking so I've got a couple of questions for you guys. Thanks in advance for any responses.

First, I've started to do the keyword search HIT but their instructions are really nondescript and seem to contain contradictions. They say to put the link that's most relative, does that mean put the first link that pops up? They also say to copy and paste the url from underneath the link and not from the address bar. I assume if the url is too long and has periods in it, to just copy it from the address bar, correct? After clicking on it of course.

Second, what are some general tips for anybody that's new to turking.

    Once again, thanks!

  2. I'm not sure I understand which hit you are doing, so I can't help on the specifics.

As for general tips. Keep it simple and do easy ones at first. Download Turkopticon ASAP so that you can check out a requester before you do it. Don't abandon hits - return them.

If you are doing a survey, make sure it is legit. Most have "consent forms" or information sheets on the first page. Most are done on Qualtrics or Survey Monkey and shouldn't ask for anything other than basic demographics. If something asks for your name, email, ip address, don't give it. Surveys almost always make you click the >> one last time to submit the survey and get your survey code. Not doing this will abandon your hit and you won't get paid.

I keep a spreadsheet of surveys I've done since most don't allow you to do them twice and you will get a rejection if you do.

Good advice Crayonshaver. I would add to start slowly. Do 2-3 HITs from a requester and wait to see if they approve. That way if you're doing something wrong without realizing it, it won't cost you a bunch of rejections. Get to know what's easy for you and what takes a little more effort.

My general rule is if it takes a long time to read instructions that are confusing, I probably will have some issues doing the HIT properly. If I haven't accepted it yet, I pass. If I've already accepted, I return. I've found that over time, some of those confusing instructions start to make sense so I re-visit them time to time.

Crayonshaver-- How do you easily keep that info? I need to start but "paperwork" isn't my strong suit, therefore I've been putting it off.

I think you're talking about the crowdsource hit worth .16, right?

What I usually do is type in the keyword to google and pick one that is relevant. As long as it has the keywords inside the website then that's acceptable. Don't click onto the website that you choose. On google there should be a green address underneath the link of your choice, highlight that copy and paste it. that's what they want. They expect you to use google as well.

There actually should be directions and pictures so you can see how to do it properly.

I hope I've made sense. Good luck. :)

I just checked and my work was accepted, so I guess my first question was irrelevant.

I did download Turkopticon, but I can't seem to find where all the info pops up. The screen shot that they show on the website doesn't jive with what I see. I don't have the little red arrow on my screen. I'll try to reinstall it right now and see if that'll work.

It seems that both you of guys have been doing mostly surveys?

Yeah, that's the one. I was just confused a little bit because sometimes if the link is too long, you have to actually click the URL and then copy/paste the link from the Address Bar - which they told you not to do. Then, they said to copy/paste the most relevant one, but sometimes the first one wasn't really the one you probably wanted to click on. So, I wasn't sure how relevant they actually were. Turns out I was thinking too hard.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

On that hit I just copy the first link and I've never been rejected. Don't worry if you can't see the entire URL under the link. Just copy and paste it as is. Also, if the first link isn't a URL like a directory or something. It will not allow you to input this. I copy the first URL under and put the directory in the comments for that hit.
