If I am a lurker and had to sign up in order to get to the greatest HITS area, because it was a members only area. That would make me curious and would make me want to join and see what it was all about. You know the old saying is for women. Don't show all the goods leave something to the mans imagination. Let them be curious and it will make them sign up. Once they see what it is about some will post and some will not. But why keep it open for all to see. I say make it members only! I voted Yes! Curiosity is what killed the cat! Personally I found that the more time I spend reading posts on the forum I earn less. I have been making 30.00++++ every day since I don't get on here as much as I used to. I find more and more work without being on the forums. The forums take away from my productivity I learned. My opinion.

The issue at hand is that locking it out to nonmembers gives them nothing to be curious about. If they don't know what happens, they have no reason to be curious about how it works, and would therefore move right on.

If the goal of this is to get people to sign up, then gentle reminders should be posted throughout the day. If the goal is to make it "exclusive," then we should just drop the debate. We don't want to become Turker Nation, with people locked out of threads because they don't have enough posts, or the posts are of low quality. I don't have anything against TN, but I disagree with how they run the forum.

Honestly, if the thread had been locked, I would not have signed up, the forum, and the thread itself, would not be anywhere near as successful as it is today without the open format and method of running is used.

Keep in mind that Andy is opposed to the lockout, and no matter how much we argue here, it's unlikely to change his view. I am sure that he has looked at the possibilities, the risks versus the rewards, and has his own reasons to keeping the thread, and the forum in general, open, whatever those reasons may be. This is not a democracy, it is a forum. At the end of the day, someone is in charge. And at the end of the day, you can't get them to change their mind, whether it be for the better or the worse.

Just my slice of the pie. :pizza:

That is a hard one. I don't want turkernation II, but at least singing up shows some interest. But sometimes I don't log in I just stop by to take a peek. I guess I would vote No just because the turkernation is so repelent.

I have no issue with the GREAT HITS section being restricted to members only.

I think I have avoided chiming in here so far, but am too lazy to check - here goes anyway.

The fact that the forum is open and publicly searchable makes it easy to find. That is how I found it. After looking it over for maybe an hour or two, I created an account. After being a member for maybe a day I posted. I cannot imagine that this is a unique story.

All the other fora are closed and unsearchable, meaning that the above could not have happened and because of that I simply have no interest in them. The idea that you would want me to join your little club before I get to see the inside of your clubhouse is more than a little childish. I never would have taken the steps to join or to participate had there been some arbitrary bar to entry.

Beyond that though, I think this idea of the whole AMT thing being a zero-sum game is just entirely wrongheaded. The idea that "the lurkers are going to take all our precious HITs" completely overlooks the fact that a more informed community is going to be beneficial to both workers and requesters in the long run.

We are improving the overall worker community by being public and open and an improved community will mean more and better work for everyone. Making anything on the site private or members only would be cutting off our collective nose to spite our face.
