Fraud, Cheating, and Low Quality Work

The reason is the rampant fraud and cheating that was being committed by some Indian turkers. Creating multiple accounts and typing random shit into HIT forms that auto-approve after a few minutes has made it so that the entire Indian turker base has to suffer for the sins of a few. Add to this the volumes of low-quality work being turned in by the minority of honest workers that lack sufficient skills (such as strong English competency) to do the work, and you've got the reason why Indians are being frozen out of the MTurk world.

The reason for the cheating is simple; if you can steal a few tens or a few hundreds of dollars by cheating, you've made serious bank in India, while in places like the US it's not worth the time and aggravation.

Thats a shame.. honest Indian workers have to suffer because of a few bad people.. that sucks.. there should be an Indian Mturk so that they have their own assignments and don't have to compete with USA workers and have a fair shot of making money

That's not right. Uttamkumar is an Indian and he got his account reinstated last week. But he had some stellar stats with a 99% rating. And all the blocks he recieved was due to surveys and Garth.

Indian workers are being screwed because they bring pennies to Mturk coffers. Just see the value of each hit that is allowed to Indian turkers, like 3 cents, 4 cents per hit. So they are completely replaceable. While on the other hand US turkers who work on high value hits like $1 and above per hits are not so easily replacable because there are a few people in US (like those mommy bloggers) who would spend their time on pathetically paying mturk hit.

now igot a mail from amazon it explains
Hello, I have checked your account and confirmed that the account was suspended because our system detected activity on your account that we believe may violate our participation agreement. Your case has been forwarded to our suspension research team to review the suspension decision and determine if the funds earned on your account will be paid to you. We will follow up with you only in the event that your suspension is reversed and your Amazon Mechanical Turk account is reopened. If you do not hear back from us, this will indicate that the suspension decision is final and funds on your account will be forfeited. Thank you for your understanding. Best regards, Lisa A.

Bt not telling how much time wil take 4 this proceedure

(ETA: Yes, I know this is long, everyone, and if analyzing the situation isn't your thing, please feel free to skip over it. I won't be offended.)

I don't know that we can be sure that's accurate, because there's no way that we can be sure that what we see on this forum represents all the Indian Turkers out there.

If it is the case that people who are being suspended generally are those without stellar stats, then I also can't agree that people are "getting screwed," because that implies they are totally without fault. I know I probably sound like a broken record, but this is why I protect my own stats. Amazon's clearly most interested in workers who seem to make requesters happy (we have already established that requesters are their priority, right?). The only way they can tell who makes requesters happy is by checking our stats.

So I guess I would say that if people have not been Turking wisely or carefully, whether intentionally or not (and chuck made some terrific observations earlier in this thread in that regard), I don't personally care where they are from. I think it's in all our best interests to keep down the number of Turkers *from anywhere* who have low approval rates reflecting mediocre work, partly because getting MTurk known for having a better and better quality workforce will attract better and better requesters. And those better requesters will also leave if they don't see that the quality of the workforce stays improved.

Now, it's also true that we should all be invested in keeping down the number of requesters who are nuts about misusing blocking. But with this whole Garth thing, it sounds like we're starting to manage that, even on Amazon's end. That's great!

I believe Amazon is cleaning house in a way that they needed to. I believe they're doing it to keep their business working well and have the best chance of growth for the future.

I am genuinely sorry if people anywhere, including in India, are losing one of their paths to making a living because of that. But is it unfair? Honestly, no, in the sense that I think any business has the right to keep only the workers who are a good fit for it. This is no more than a contractor system we do work under here. Amazon has no obligation to guarantee or provide steady work or even the right to work. It's wise of all of us to keep that in mind, because if getting accounts canceled does happen to us, the best choices available will all be from having a Plan B in place. I truly hope everyone does.
