I know this is going to sound stupid, but I don't care, I'm going to ask it anyway since it will be making my life easier and things faster. But is there anyway I can set MS word 2007 to automatically indent (I think it's called, you know, what the tab button does) all the sentences without me having to go back in the end and having to press tab on the ones with more then that one sentence? Does what I'm asking make sense...I hope so...

Thank you for that info Whimsey. That is going to save me a lot of time in the long run on doing the hits. You would think something like that wouldn't really matter but in the end it really does save you time! What do you have your auto corrections on if any? I'm really not that good with ms word at all. I just know the bare minimum to get the transcription done and most of the time I just copy and paste the templates they give me! Haha

The only thing I've really done is to make sure smart quotes are off. This summer's been very different from any other I've had so I'm not doing a ton of mturk, just enough to make sure a few small things are covered...won't be till the fall that I'm gearing up for a lot of transcription work.

I've been considering investing in the basic transcription equipment and I should be able to do so within the next few months without putting a major dent in my budget. I figure it should be worth it in the long run. Do you have any suggestions when it comes to choosing a good set of headphones that are great for sound quality yet not expensive beyond reason? And do you use Express Scribe? If not, is there an alternative program you might recommend? And as a beginner at this, which requester would be the best for me to start off with? I'm looking for a requester who's reasonable to work with more so than a high-paying requester.

If you can help in any of these areas, thanks in advance! ;)

There are other people here who know wayyyy more than I do. If you check out the threads for Casting Words you should find tips there --- tons of them. I'm not sure why SpeechInk doesn't have a section but more than likely your questions are answered over there (casting words). I do use Express Scribe and just use my own ipod headphones.

Pretty expensive. But well worth it.

    Thanks to Whimsy and BMW-M3.:D

I've made not of your suggestions and will definitely be referring to them when I've stashed a bit more money away.

    Good luck

Hi Noliah! I am new to all this also, I've only been into it about 2 months now. I really enjoy doing it though whenever I get the chance to, which is usually at night till early morning when my baby is down for the night. The first requester I ever did was Castingwords. And then someone in a forum told me about Speechink and from then on, till now I have been only doing Speechink hits. I want to try and move on to a stable company though, probably in another month or so after I get some more practice in. I only use Express Scribe only because it's what I'm used to, but I have tried using ftw, linq something, and one other program all at least once. But in the end I always came back to Express Scribe. I invested in $60 headphones. They are OK. Not the greatest, but it works. I also heard that the Sennheiser headphones work really good too. The headphones I'm using are called Audiotechnica ATH-M35. I also invested in a foot pedal, at first I wasn't going to get it thinking I could just use the hot keys, but some other members in another forum I started out on all recommended that I do, and I am so glad that I did. It's just so much faster and easier using a foot pedal. I have the ones the majority of the others have, the Infiniti one. You just plug the USB into the slot and it automatically scans and pretty much installs itself. And it's very easy to use with Express Scribe. Well, good luck to you! The first couple of hits might take awhile, but after a week or so you get the hang of it. I really enjoy doing it as a pass time for some extra money. Let me know how your first job goes!
