    Hello.

My name is Jodi. I live in the states, in Wisconsin.

I began turking about a month ago, and I am really enjoying it. I am a freelance writer-editor-proofreader, so I do a lot of transcription, editing, and proofing on MTurk. I like to supplement that with quality surveys.

    I can try...

I always recommend starting with one company and studying their style guide. Keep it handy and, in the beginning, double-check all of your work before you submit it. Once you're getting good feedback, you'll be able to work faster and feel confident in what you're doing.

Since you're not in the states, you might have good luck with companies like ClariTrans, who use verbatim transcription, meaning that you type exactly what you hear as opposed to a dictation that you have to clean up and correct their grammar. Really, quality is the most important thing and as you get better at it, you'll go faster.

If you get seriously into it and do longer transcriptions, then I suggest software like Express Scribe, a foot pedal, and a work expander (where you type abbreviations and the software expands them for you, to save time).

So true. But there's nothing to stop us from collectively bargaining in the form of refusing to do cheap HITs and leaving those to the scammers.

So true. The number one reason that most HITs don't pay enough is that seemingly smart people are willing to do them for much less pay than the tasks warrant.

If this practice would stop, then requesters would be forced to pay a fair wage, and they would still make a tidy sum due to their back-end savings (don't get me started).

I won't do HITs that don't pay me a fair wage, and it's my hope that others won't either.

Yes, agreed! I want to make at least minimum wage, so I try to get HITS that pay .15/minute or more. I refuse to work for chump change too.

I will bump my approval rate with cheap hits just to give my numbers the ability to absorb rejections later. Sometimes the chump change is worth that.

I did that to get my numbers up in the beginning too. Or, if I get a rejection, I'm a bit more willing to work cheaply for a bit to keep that 99.9%. So, I certainly agree with your thoughts on this. I think that it's similar to the fact that I take the time to print out a style guide and study it before doing HITS by a transcription company that is new to me. Edited to add: I mean, we all do certain things that don't pay (or don't pay much), like visiting this forum or using turkopticon, to help our earnings overall.

But, in general, I aim for that higher number. I suppose that we all do. :)

I've also seen that some people, one in particular here in the forum, can do those cheap hits at an amazing speed and accuracy. They've got a knack for it and it does suit their abilities and interests while still paying out.

I'm not a complete advocate for all of those cheaper batch hits, but they aren't all that bad. I remember working in a shop making circuit boards and the number of pieces to be placed per board was high and there was an hourly goal. It barely paid $9 an hour. Thousands of pieces placed properly, standing, just a lunch break. I'd rather set my own goals with my own expectations.

Didn't mean to hijack your thread =)

Remember though if you do the penny hits that are really fast you're approval rating will go up which will allow you to do the bigger hits that pay amount more. You usually need a solid score within the 90's to even get a chance at those hits. Take one day or work session and just dedicate those cheaper hits to build up you're overall rating.

Hey, Grimtock. I'm not sure if you saw an earlier follow-up comment that I do occasionally do quick HITS and I also do a lot of low-paying HITS that I deem worthy because I can do them fast, they're easy, and/or I enjoy them. I don't want anyone to think that I just do high-paying HITS and always make a lot of money doing Turk work. I don't. :)

So, I absolutely agree with you. It's important to have that cushion in case you get a bad requester that does a lot of rejections for no good reason. I try to keep a good balance, I guess, and when I can I try to work for requesters that I feel pay a fairer wage.

    Hi Grimtock,

    Are you using the Turkopticon?

    Welcome yourfavoritewife!

I've 'seen' you around and I'm glad you joined. Like you, I do a lot of transcription and now writing. I tried editing once, but I'm going to wait to try that again, lol.

I'll see you around and happy turking!
