okay so im at a point where iam starting to doubt if it is possible to make a decent amount of money on mturk. I start turking and right away start thinking that the amount is not worth it. I need someone to direct me to a guide or maybe pass on past knowledge to how he/she started to make a decent amount of money. By decent i mean anywhere from 30-50$. If there are certain kind of hits i should do please recommend any. should i work on batches that pay 2-6 cents. would doing these batches be worth it?

I've been doing this for three years and on average, I only make $10 per day. I know people who say they make more, but I think most of them are on here every waking minute, which just isn't possible for most people, and even if it's possible, is a tragic waste of one's life.

You should be making at least $5/hr from your hits. Personally I like to stay above $6, but beggars can't be choosers. There are a few tips:

Stay focused. Turk is work, don't be surprised if your money falls when you slack off.
When you do a good HIT, write it down. Periodically search for reposts of the best.
Keep up with the great hits thread! There's lots of good stuff that gets posted every day.

It all depends on what jobs are posted that day, and if you happen to be on there looking for work at the right time.

Turking will never be an alternative to any 'real' job. And I mean any. Sweeping the floor at McDonalds is a far more profitable use of your time than this is.

The people on this forum turk because, for a wide variety of reasons, each of us has no better options open to us at the moment.

ETA: HappyFish is much happier and more optimistic fish than I am a cat. Every now and then I happen onto something that pays $5 - $6 an hour. For one or two hours. And then that batch is all done and gone, and for the next several hours (or days) one's only options are to work for $1 an hour or not work at all on principal.

I disagree. There's numerous advantages to turking. I would much rather do this than anything else, as evidenced by the fact that this is what I do.

If it paid minimum wage, I'd agree.

I make minimum wage easily when I'm working. It took a while to figure out which jobs to do, which to avoid, and strategies to tackle the jobs. But many of the HITs I do frequently make me upwards of $10/hr. Not to mention that min. wage after taxes is pretty low!

People are always telling me they steadily make more than minimum wage on here, but I don't see how it's possible. We're all looking at the same hits on there, and we're all singling out the same requesters as the best, and I just can't see that it's possible for anybody to regularly make that kind of money.

My best day this month was $35, and I probably worked fourteen hours that day to achieve it.

My best day this month was $80.07 and I worked about 7 hours or so. But no never consistently. I usually make on average $20 a day and that's even a struggle on certain days.
It's possible to do but it does take a lot of concentration and monotony which isn't for everyone, even me. And I am only doing this until I can find a job that will accommodate what I am looking for financially mainly (hard to find)

OP you have to work up, I never made more than $5 a day when I first started actively turking. When I actually first opened my account back in 09 I made 14 cents and then gave up because it seemed impossible to really earn anything. It does seem impossible right now but you can make $10 at least working a few hours, and then from there you can make more.

Bredeanf is many times faster than I am. She can do about three of the praveen hits in the time it takes me to do one, and I'm damned if I know how she does it. And there are a lot of hits I won't touch that she apparently will, because I can't tolerate them. Monotony is far too mild a word for it. Some hits are pure torture, and I apparently have a low mental pain threshold.

This is very important. I've always been very quick with figuring sorting, so I tend to stick with the "Judge sentiment" type HITs. Praveen was a good example. I was making almost $20/hr on his jobs. On the 'judge sentiment' HITs, I stop the page from loading after the text appears. There's no reason to wait another 1-15 seconds while all the ads and pictures load when you have what you need on the screen.

If you don't have the ability to zone out while working on batch hits, you'll probably struggle. That's why I am always on my...umm....glaucoma medicine.

Honestly i'm not sure either! I have horrible attention and a really hard time concentrating but sometimes when it comes to well paying batches I guess I turn into The Little Engine That Could especially when I look at my daily earnings.

I always catch myself looking at the dwindling numbers of HITs, then telling myself I can go another (hour, two hours, five hours) until they are done.

Although frequent mini-breaks to stretch the legs and clear the head are needed when marathoning like that.

It is very possible! http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa359/stlrfn8/30k_zps9f000e85.png You just have to find your niche as everyone has different preferences. Some prefer writing, some prefer batch hits and some prefer surveys. I would however, tell you to just be careful and don't do too many hits from any one requester until you are sure they are not scammers and such. The learning curve may be steep but it is well worth it in the long run.

It probably helps a little bit that I'm also working later at night, and there's less competition for the decent work. I'm usually up when HITs start rolling in about 3 am PST, and go until I fall asleep.

I wish I had access to glaucoma medicine.
If I didn't think someone in this tiny town would rat me out to the bored herd of Barney Fifes policing it, I'd grow my own.

You're always welcome on the west coast. We have a.....different attitude than most of the country ;)

Edit: (Another benefit of Turking!) lol

There's also no going through the application-interview-WAITWAITWAIT process to get hired, no schedule imposed upon you, and no commitment whatsoever: you start when you want, you stop when you want, you go on break whenever you want, and no questions will be asked if you feel like taking the day off! Is my phone ringing? I'm taking this call, and nobody is going to complain about it; when I'm done maybe I'll put some music on!

I'm on a laptop, too: if I feel like working outside I'm going to work outside, if I feel like taking it to Starbucks I'll go work there!

Come to think of it, here we are socializing on this forum on the 'work computer'.... How many of you have a tab open to your Facebook right now as well?

And of course, if needed, I've got some Yuengling around here someplace to take the edge off :p (EDIT: yes, 'glaucoma medicine' as well, somehow I didn't notice those last couple posts.)

It's all true! I'm always free to help my friends with a project, or to drive my mother to the doctor. And when it comes down to it and I want to take a three day vacation, I can put my nose the grindstone and pay for it fairly quickly. It's similar to when I owned my own business, except I don't have to pay rent, hire employees, be at the store, or deal with the business taxes! But I still get out what I put in, and that's what's important to me. I can just throw my headphones on, turn on some upbeat music, and go to it!
