Sorry guys, this question is really important. It is sort of off topic, but kind of on topic, because we need computer advice in order to turk! Anyways, I have a really bad disorder of O.C.D. and seem to love to keep my work computer clean and free of space, so it works as fast and as efficiently as possible. For example, I don't like no programs on my computer, unless it's something that helps me work faster. Anyway, I'm assuming I deleted some registry files and some things aren't working right. I currently use Windows 7. If I upgrade to the Windows 7 Premium version, will this fix a missing file problem?

If you think you corrupted your registry or deleted some system files or something I would (before you upgrade) just try to run the repair tool that comes with WIN7. Just boot to the installation media and it should give you the option of running it.

If you create regular backups and/or restore points just revert to the last one - you may lose a little data but it is still easier than running an upgrade. BTW if you don't create regular backups and restore points, start doing so.

Running an upgrade may or not work - if the problem is something that the OS considers core to the system it should get fixed in the process, but there is no real guarantee of this, and if the OS considered it core you would have seen a lot of dire warnings when you were messing with it. I'm kind of assuming you didn't see a bunch of dire warnings...

Let me know if this helps or you have additional questions or whatever.

If you created a win 7 repair disc then use that. I will assume that you probably did not so if that is the case you can use another computer to make one. Here is how: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2083-system-repair-disc-create.html

If you have a corrupted install because of deleted files then an upgrade probably will not work. You can try the restore but if you havent created any restore points then it wont work. Unless you have either a repair disc or the win 7 install discs you are probably not going to be able to fix it.

If it was me I would try to repair using either the repair cd or the install cd. If all else fails and sometimes it does, then you will need to use the restore cds that either came with your pc or the ones that you should have made.

Hey guys thanks for the answers. Still need a little help, but I'll go into a little more detail. When I boot my pc, on the desktop, instead of the desktop showing the icons to the programs, for example the little color icon, for google chrome. Instead all of them, but the recycling bin show a blank white page. I have created multiple restore points, but when I try to click system restore, it gives me another error message saying "Unspecified error." I don't have a repair disc, so that's what it looks like I need to obtain huh?

try running windows in safe mode. when you turn on your computer, before it shows the windows logo while it's loading, hold down f8 and it should give you a menu with different options, choose safe mode. there's safe mode with networking which will allow you to be online when you're in safe mode but you shouldn't have to be in that mode for too long. try running system restore from there...

Tried to restore from safe mode and get the same problem. Weird huh? I'm wondering if i re-install Windows 7 completely would it fix registry problems? I would think it would because it seems like having a brand new system. There is an old computer repair guy on craigslist selling the Windows 7 Install cd's for $25., I think I'm going to pick one up and try that!

if you just install it over your existing copy, it should definitely replace vital missing files, but you may have to reinstall your programs and drivers. if you back your stuff up on an external drive or whatever, and then format your hard drive and install a clean copy of windows it will definitely fix everything, but you'll have to move all your files back and reinstall all your programs and drivers. good luck!

Staples Sells this, do you think this will fix the problem Sasquatch? It's a Windows Registry Repair software? The problem is, I can't go online and re download anything. Any registry repairs or anything, because it says it can't find the files needed to download. So I'm stuck. I don't know if I buy the registry repair if my computer will allow me to download it, or if I should go ahead and get the Windows 7, and reinstall.

how do you know it's a registry issue? what errors have you gotten, aside from your icons changing, which could indeed indicate that your registry was somehow wiped out?

EDIT: i'm heading to bed, but someone should be able to help. in the meantime it would be useful if you could recall any specific things you did or any specific error messages you might have gotten, or other things that don't work properly aside from what you've mentioned so far...

The icon issue sounds like the icon cache being corrupt (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...ank-icon/4db723f7-c1f6-4660-9887-a892d22dc297), but I have not a clue about your unspecified error.

Tried in safe mode and with regular boot up. Keeps giving me an error message every time I try to open system restore. Anytime I try to open any program, whether it's my pictures, documents, internet, settings, any program it gives an error message like the file can't be found. Think I'm going to have to try and reinstall windows 7.

Boot into safe mode with networking support. Download malwareantibytes and run it. If that doesn't fix it get a copy of hijack this and run it and PM me the report it gives you after running. I have, I mean my neighbors kitten has the win 7 disks you need and can host them on one of my sites and give you the link but youll need a comp to burn the ISO to a disk. Reinstalling is always the final option. to me it sounds like you got a nasty bug. My neighbors kitten has bootlegs of just about any repair software you might need so if you want to try a reg repair app just let me know and I will have the kitten put it online for you =] (Hate to self incriminate)

Hey, I took the laptop to a computer tech. He told me I had big problems pretty much. I deleted some major stuff by accident. I was in a hurry, and needed the computer, so I decided not to leave it. Not to mention, I didn't have an estimate to even fix it, because he has no clue what's wrong with it at the moment. I found someone with windows 7 program. Tried to re-install. It even tells me I can't re-install windows because of the missing files. I have someone that's picking up the laptop for a hundred dollars this weekend, then I'll be off shopping to find one of these awsome christmas deals on a new one! I have bigger plans in store in the future, I'm wanting to custom build a pc, just for working to start off the new year right.

I was going to add my reply, but looks like you already made your decisions so my advice is moot, but I'll give it anyways.

Sounds to me like you deleted some file associations as well as probably some system environment variables out of the registry. Only thing that would fix something like that would be a complete uninstall/reinstall of Windows 7, an upgrade WILL NOT fix it. It could be fixed manually without reinstalls, but it would take hours of very detailed work by a professional, which would end up costing more to you than buying a new computer.

My advice for the future is...leave the registry alone. Modifying is not going to increase the speed of your computer enough to even be noticeable. It's surely not going to speed it up enough to help your mTurk earnings. If you feel you have to clean it, use a free automated program like CCleaner. NEVER manually edit the registry unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing.

Custom building a PC is pretty easy, it's just a lot of small steps. Miss one step and your computer most likely won't even turn on. The good part is, short of physical and electrostatic damage, you get as many tries as you need to get it right. Nothing can be done building that can't be undone. I'd always be willing to help you if you needed it as well. PM me on here if you want my email or my cellphone number to text me.

yeah, sounds like your registry got borked, it keeps track of file associations and and probably points to system restore files as well.

definitely go ahead with the pc, i just built an awesome computer with mturk money and some great thanksgiving sales on newegg, cost around $650 for something maybe one level below top-of-the-line, plays all the games i can throw at it, if you're into that, and that's using onboard intel hd 4000 graphics... best investment though - 23" or bigger monitor...

Maybe you can get a hold of windows 7 sp1 for now and try to get the beast back online. Sounds like you have services that are not functioning. You knock out one of those vital services and you got problems across the board. Use another machine to download the service pack.

You will want to do that anyway after reinstalling windows if you go that route.
