Took me ages to figure out you can accept the HIT without clicking the first one of those. Can't believe how many people completely ignore it, too!
I can say I have done about 50+ reviews so far. I have only had to correct 2 so far. I am in the US, but I have had to type, and pretend I am in the UK for other jobs for years, however the Semicolon thing is only one I am getting used to. I also alk with co-workers that are based in the UK, and the accent is easy for me to pick up on too One correct I made was something like "wall is mark" was the only part of it. I changed it to "marked" another one failed to capitalize Bosch. Both of these submitters had a rating under 80%
Some idiot just got me a low grade for capitalising (incorrectly) 3 instances of the work wicker. Very annoying.
And now I find I have a 72 because the speaker corrected himself, I tidied up the meaning (it's not verbatim, we're meant to do that) and the reviewer has put it all back in again. Angry now.
I am more lenient when it comes to grading.. However looking back on the test I did to complete them, I got nailed for not capitalizing "Bosch Classic" when I had "Bosch classic". So I figured in review, if I didn't at least correct Bosch, I may get nailed for that for not catching it. Though if you ever see a comment saying Good! or anything like that - It just may be me
I started doing some of these today. Pretty easy to do, and the ones that are like 30 seconds of audio are usually a quick 10 cents. I'm a little nervous about the idea of users doing the reviews, but I've got a 99 rating right now after about 15 submissions, so I guess I'm doing well enough.
One correction you made ;-) I returned that HIT (or another containing the same "wall is mark"). I would've written "marked" but expected someone to change it back to "mark".
It is so super simple to quickly Google Bosch Classic and see if it comes up as a model name, don't understand why everyone doesn't do this?
I agree! that was my mistake on my test for them. I probably take too much time when transcribing, but I have had near-perfect scores though.
Yes they usually have a lot everyday. I am a bit scared of verbatim. I am sticking with CW right now until I work up the nerve to do verbatim, lol. Their grading system seems better than CW though- You only need to get 90% to get the bonus instead of doing a perfect transcription based on graders and editors opinions with CW. How is everyone doing on these? Is it hard to get a 90%? Their test wasn't too bad, but trying to catch every noise and write it down the right way might be difficult. They have a lot of rules at Speechink.
The full bonus isn't received just by hitting 90. There's a maximum of 50% increase given a perfect (or near perfect) score. Grading is much more harsh with SpeechInk. Every um, uh, stumble, false start, utterance needs to be transcribed and the audio quality bites. For Verbatim jobs I have an overall score of 93. For home inspection I have an overall score of 99. CastingWords' bonus scale is different. 7 - 2x base pay 8 - 2.5x base pay 9 - 3x base pay. You don't need a perfect transcription to get a bonus with CW. Home Inspections are easier than their other HITs, in my opinion. They're short and the person speaking knows they're going to be transcribed (most of them anyways). The audio quality for SpeechInk's other HITs leaves a lot to be desired, in my opinion.
Though you don't verbatim the home inspections - if someone says "working oven with black door, white door on fridge, correction, beige door on fridge" you would put "working oven with black door, beige door on fridge" - at least that is how I understand it.
Yeah, sorry for the confusion. SpeechInk does have non-verbatim jobs (like home inspection) but I guess I was answering more of an "overall" feel for SpeechInk since she hasn't worked for them yet. I started out with them and switched over to CW.
Agreed Scott, there is the double pop-up box that keeps warning the home inspection transcriptions are not verbatim. If anyone is thinking of trying them for the first time please make sure you know the differences between UK and US English (these need UK) and please, PLEASE read the rule about using ; before starting a list, and only a list!
That's what they say in their HITs- that is you get above 90% you get the bonus- What is their bonus then? It all rules out to about the same- 3X still comes out to about the same as Speechinks. Speech ink gives more for the base bay and less for the bonus...but CW gives less for base and more for bonus- Which still gives about the same pay for both companies. You do have to get a 9 and have zero mistakes to get a 9 for CW. But based on opinion of the grader etc :/ Losing that full bonus pay sucks when you only get an 8. So if you get above 90 what is the bonus for Speechink? They decide based on the percentage from 90-100? That would suck.
From the HIT page: Each job with a rating above 90 will receive a bonus. The maximum bonus will be 50% of the job's reward. The higher your score, the higher your bonus. I believe so.
Either company can work for you, depending on your comfort. Just try to make sure that you're able to make $0.25-.30 per audio minute, factoring in bonuses.
Absolutely. Please do read the rules on these HITs! Use UK English, not US English. ALSO look at the transcription glossary that is provided. Spell the brand names correctly. If you are in the US, you might not be familiar with the UK brands. I hate having to correct because I know the original worker will take a hit. But some mistakes cannot be overlooked.
