To Rep or Not to Rep

That just sounds like an issue of mods not taking complaints about individual rep situations seriously enough.

And that's why I put most of the responsibility on the person receiving the rep. It's not victim blaming. It's just life. There are gonna be stupid people anywhere. You can choose to do what you need to do to be affected by them as little as possible. Yes, ideally, they just wouldn't be rude/inconsiderate/whatever. But that's not realistic. So until there's a way to retroactively instill manners in people we all just need to realize that it's up to us to control how we handle things.

I just don't see the point of taking away the rep system when it's working the way it should. There are abusive people, but they are far outnumbered by the people using it properly.

 

I don't know if I agree with this. JonGoley has been nothing but an ass his entire time here, insulting and abusive and never contributes ANYTHING but negativity. Yet he has never been banned that I know of.

 

This is why I don't really say much in the forum anymore. I love this place.. but things work a bit wonky around here sometimes. There are people who get banned in the blink of an eye for who knows what, because it seems they're acting normally and then poof.. banned. Then we have JonGoley who is nothing but nasty and abusive.. yet he gets a brief slap on the wrist before coming back and spewing the same hateful nonsense he always spews.

 

Could you point me towards one of his posts? I did a forum search, but it wasn't particularly helpful.

It is victim blaming. However, that is not really the issue.

This is the main issue. The rep system is not working the way it should. If it was, people who leave abusive rep would be banned or, at the minimum, have their rep giving abilities taken away. If that is not possible, remove the rep system since it's benefit does not outweigh the negatives (forum drama, anonymous abuse). You can't have a system where 60% of the time, it works everytime...and the outnumbered people just have to deal with it.

In my opinion, removing the anonymous portion won't really fix the situation. What will likely happen is that someone will leave a negative rep comment and the person receiving it will then post on the forum, calling them out and starting drama with that person, and/or they will leave neg rep for them everytime the other person posts. Pretty soon we'll just have escalated rep wars between multiple users of the forum.

The reputation system has it's benefits, but it causes more problems than anything else in my opinion.

 

Victim blaming would be if I said "it's your fault for getting the negative rep in the first place."
Encouraging people to ignore the negativity isn't blaming the victim. It's just reminding people that they can control whether they check their rep or not.

Edited to add: This is an online forum. I feel like everyone is forgetting that. Maybe others aren't as active on other forums, but from my experiences there is a relatively small amount of drama and trolling on here.
I don't see how the rep causes so many problems. Most of the conversations over rep that I see in the daily HITs thread are "lol, i just got this rep. haha. i don't even care" and those are very rarely anything that's actually offensive. I know there are more neg reps happening that aren't discussed, but those can't be anywhere near as common as everyone wants to act like or there would be something actually done about it. I'm still sticking with what I said earlier, that the problem is not in the rep system, the problem is in the mods handling of abusive forum users. And with the 60% of the time discussion it's coming down to personal opinions of how well the rep system is working. In my opinion it works well enough, because for every troll there are plenty more people giving positive rep. If that weren't the case there would be a lot more people in the red.

I would like the system a lot better if we could reply to whoever repped us, negative or positive, even if it's still anonymous. As is all we can do is post about in the forum

 

Was there ever an outcome/decision from this? Any plans for the rep system? I'm anxious for some kind of solution to this still ongoing problem.

 

I don't think this is an official poll for potential change, it's just something somebody started because they don't like the system.

 

Right, but Andy was involved in the conversation here and was asking what we all would like to see happen. I'm hoping he took the comments here into consideration and is planning some kind of change.

 

I've had a few lately that were BS. They have to be from the same person, they say the exact same stupid comment. Be nice to see who neg reps though.

 

I noticed the rep star is gone today. Is this why? Or did I mess something up?? I gave two positive reps yesterday and want to see if I got and 'love' back.
