I signed up for mturk a few weeks ago and I was rejected and I have no idea why. I live in America. Does anyone know why and if there is anything I can do about it?

I'm right there with ya. I'm also in the US and I have no idea why I was declined. Sucks because I was really counting on this. Looks like if you don't fit a certain demographic, no hits for you. It's pretty bizarre that the application asks for sexual and religious orientation, I doubt that's even legal. I was honest and said hetero and agnostic, fwiw.

Where did they ask that? Anyway now that I think about it I might have made a mistake with my address.

Your address has to match exactly what the IRS has on file for you. If you have never filed before I know there are other Turkers who were in that situation. I don't remember what they did. Can you do a search for topics on here? You probably will find previous postings.

That may be it. Search for what? I tried using the search engine looking for problems similar to mine and found nothing helpful. And if I do report to the IRS will they approve me?

Thanks, Fibonacci, that's really interesting. My IRS address should be correct but I decided to check my address in my Amazon account and the default was wrong. Seems I did not update it when I moved a year ago. I wonder if that's what caused the problem. My current address was listed, but not as the default. Of course even if that really did mess me up the problem then is how to fix it... So now I'm off to see if I can find some kind of help/support/appeal process to get this sorted out.

How do you appeal and get them to review your application again?

I contacted Mturk support by email and explained that my address on file with Amazon was wrong when I applied for Mturk. I asked directly how I could resubmit my application with the corrected address.

The first response I got back was exactly what I expected. Basically this: "We select new applicants based on the needs of our market." and this: "Don't worry, if our market needs change we'll contact you."

I decided to hold my breath while I waited for that to happen. But that turned out to be a bad idea. Instead I wrote back and asked two questions - Does Mturk ever actually invite previously rejected applicants? and again - How can I resubmit my application with the corrected address, just to make sure it wasn't the address issue that caused the rejection?

Still waiting for a reply to my latest questions, I'll post results here. I'm 90% certain I am beating my head against a brick wall, but I figure it's worth a shot. I find it very hard to believe that Mturk ever bothers to invite rejected applicants to join. And I also think it's very, very unlikely that they will ever let people resubmit after a rejection because they would expect to get flooded with applications they know they don't want.

Update- As expected, I got exactly nowhere. My second query got redirected into a dead end Do Not Reply folder somewhere. So off to Clickworker I go. Which is screwed up and broken at the moment, but at least their application process has some transparency. If you don't make it, it's because you messed up the assessment.

I registered a new worker account about 4 to 5 days ago and it's still saying they're reviewing my account. How long does it usually take them to review someone's account?

I don't recall how long mine took but I'm guessing they are a bit behind because of the holiday. I'd give it a few more before I start to worry.

It took less than 48 hours for them to decline me. It's not like they are actually reviewing anything, since new applicants have only given them a few pieces of information and no work samples. They are just looking at whether you fit the demographic their clients want. If it takes them 4-5 days, you have probably been declined and they just haven't gotten around to making it official yet.

I got rejected too last month. Just re-apply with a new account. I eventually got accepted. I think the problem was my address too. In my old Amazon acct i have a lot of old addresses from moving, and addresses of my family whom i sent Amazon packages too. It must have confused them when I applied, b/c i got rejected the first time. The second time I had only my one current address and got accepted. Just keep trying until they accept you. It took about a week for them to approve me, or longer.
I thought for sure i would be rejected again, and was surprised when i wasn't. Just keep trying.

    Update!

Well it took 7 months, but a week ago I was very surprised to get an email from Mturk saying I was accepted! I'm guessing they lose a good chunk of the workforce when summer hits and people wanna play outside instead of tap-tapping in front of a screen. So it seems they really do keep applicants on file and hit ya back eventually. Kewl.

Nice! Glad you got accepted. It declined me the first time around too, very quickly as well if I recall, but I haven't been using mturk as much recently, but am looking to go back towards it for extra pocket money every month.
