I have to disagree! CastingWords is by far the best transcription requestor. If English is your first language and you have know proper punctuation it can be very rewarding. I just finished a 13 minute job for almost $6. The pay may be low but the work is steady and if you're good at it, then you can make more money. Other companies are SpeechInk (they only do verbatim insurance transcripts) and SpeakerText (which pays low but has a ton of work). I wouldn't say there isn't any good transcription work! If you're serious about doing transcription in the future, MTurk provides a ton of experience so you can work on your skills and hopefully get hired by a regular transcription company in the future. Good luck to you! BTW this is Latoya Bradford, I signed up for a regular account instead of using my Facebook login.

Also if you're looking for a cheap foot pedal or headphones, check out ebay. I just got a $30 foot pedal and it makes transcribing so much faster. If you have any questions feel free to message me.

Thanks for the confirmation, Bitterkitten! I am new to this forum as well as Mturk [as of a few days ago] and recently signed on with SpeechInk also. Will be interested to see how things work out there...

Oh boy, a 5min HIT for .50. Let's see, if I'm the best transcriber in the world I can do it (depends on how fast they talk and the language they use which most of the time equals fast and rich vocabulary which adds slew of time not to mention the ill recordings with static) in 10 minutes. So I get $3.00 per hour. Plus the time to search for the HIT, upload it into WebDictate (or whatever, not free for the-better-ones software I am using) with an initial $30 plus shipping investment (at least) for my foot pedals. Oh boy !!! So NOT that desperate (thanks my god).

I usually do surveys so there's not much repeat business there. But today I decided to revisit transcription. So I took a HIT by SpeechInk which I'm qualified at 87. The HIT (again!!) was barely understandable. Bunch of druggies talking about stuff that very few (unless you're one of them) can understand. Well, a 4min 10 sec HIT took me 1 1/2 hours to transcribe properly (I am a perfectionist). I had to slow down, rewind, speed up, rewind, rewind, slow down, etc. to understand what the hell they were saying to do the transcription (I type fast btw). And even then it wasn't 100% !!! Like, obviously they would use software to transcribe if it was so clear, right? Anyways, it was so frustrating and oh (1.25 and bonus of .65 to make $1.85 and I didn't get the full bonus last time). I wrote to them that I would like to be compensated the equivalent of $8 per hour (hey, no health care, no bathroom breaks, should be worth it, right?). We'll see what happens. But my guess after looking at their website for what they charge customers equals sorry, we only take real desperate people / slave laborers.
