I'd second that re: stats. But I realize most people just see "math", and they put up a huge mental block. General stats for everyone should focus on the nuances of the analysis, more than just scribbling formulas on the board (yes, I had one intro stats prof that only did this. Only cover very theoretical formulas, not bothering to put them into context). Practical significance vs. statistical significance, for example. I've seen too many shoddy (published) psychology and sociology reports that are built on idiot-stats. Stupid assumptions, with "correct" numbers are USELESS. It's much easier to get someone to help with the number side, or do the numbers side, if you know the foundation of how to apply it.

I would love to see high schools teach statistics. And I don't think journalism schools should turn their graduates loose on the world without a refresher!

Yes, I really did mean to suggest a second language prerequisite for getting in to college.

But only for as long as colleges are selective. If I had my druthers, I'd pay beaucoup extra taxes to have universal open enrollment in all universities.

I don't have children, so some might say that I don't have a dog in this fight. I disagree, because I am probably still going to have to live on this planet for a while. It is in my interest to have smarter neighbors rather than stupider ones. I think it's incredibly short-sighted to deny an education to people who are capable of learning. I don't even care if it's "productive" as in "for a job." I don't even care if some guy spends my tax dollars flunking bonehead calculus eight years in a row. One way or t'other, I am going to have to pay for stupid people anyway. I'd rather pay for a library than build a new prison. And if somebody takes the time and trouble to fail a course eight times over, it's a rather inexpensive form of mischief, all things considered.

Edit: Since it seems to be gone (dear God), I'll describe it - they want you to make a video detailing a (true) inappropriate relationship you had with a boss, upload it to YouTube, and make the video public.

 

It'd be a complete violation of the First Amendment but during Presidential Campaigns I think it should be illegal for the news media to report poll results without explaining the margin of error. The number of times I've heard a news anchor say someone is "leading" in the polls when the difference between the two major candidates was within the margin of error . . . .

Germany's system isn't half-bad either. Tuition is around $3000/year, and students get a 500 Euro(~$650)/month stipend.

Everything in America is just so expensive (health care, military, heck - there is $1 trillion in student loan debt in the US!). But at least the billionaires have slightly more gadgets to play with.
