I had heard rumors from highly trusted sources that spamgirl was officially an Amazon employee now of some sort, but I didn't know it was so easy to prove!

Talk about the fox guarding the henhouse!

    Agreed.

Q: Why would an Amazon owned-and-operated forum deny its own Turkers access?
    A: They wouldn’t.

The admins are simply hiding behind Amazon’s skirts and using weasel words to imply that Amazon is the hand inside the glove.

You could always pay for a historical WHOIS search if you want to see who is really behind turkernation.com.

They are employed in the sense that any affiliate who sells product for Amazon is employed. Get a website, apply to be an associate and you can call yourself an Amazon employee too, ;-)

A VERY SIMPLE google search will revial ALOT of information about spamgirl.. Including HOW she got to be admin of that forum and her interactions with amazon staff and so forth.. I'll give ya a hint.. Google her Spamgirl handle you'll find a blog with the article..

I read parts of it - I have done a lot with the "UCE" world in the past.. Though I deal more on the 419 -Scam emails these days and help victims (though little can be done) But prevention is the key.

Amazon has its own turker forums, though little used. One for Masters is one - but ghost town pretty much.

But I guess since I have Amazon affliate links on my website, I can call myself an employee too!

Amazon technologies inc and Amazon.com are two completely different companies. Amazon technologies is in no way part of Amazon.com. It's just that, it's a technology company with the initial name as Amazon. Both have different corporate address

    1) Amazon.com, Inc
    Legal Dept, P.O. Box 81226
    Seattle, WA 98108-1226
    US

    2) Amazon Technologies, Inc.
    P.O. Box 8102
    Reno, Nevada 89507
    United States

It's just like, I'm an ordinary guy and my name is Harrison ford but that doesn't means that I have starred in the movie "Air Force one".

Most probably, the original company Amazon Technologies Inc (an ordinary web services company) found out that they share a name with a multinational company Amazon.com that they decided why not start a forum for amazon and then turkernation was born. I don't know how that website turkernation works but once I read only a single post on their website but didn't post anything and the other day my IP was banned. Maybe they have a psychic on their payroll and know before hand who is there to screw their website. Hehe

A: They trusted Spamgirl, and she said it would be a good idea. She was really really wrong.

I was there for the early discussions about making it a two-tiered forum to lock out people who lurk for good info but never share their own. It's not inherently a terrible idea. She just implemented it in the worst way possible, and the timing coincided with Amazon buying the Turker Nation "brand" by buying the turkernation.com domain and paying spamgirl to lock down the old forum and admin the one they own.

This part is kind of interesting:

She got her wish wrt working for Amazon, but not the precise job she desired.

    She just flat-out sold-out.

I mean, more power to her, I guess, and good luck with alla that.
But holy shit did she royally fuck up a good opportunity.

(And I hope if Andy is ever in a position to sell this place, he'll at least have the decency to tell us he's doing so. I'd still stay here as long as he didn't go from cool admin to total nutso admin like spammy did.)

Everyone who has a valid worker ID should be able to access a requester - not just those who post circle jerk affiliate links and other meaningless tripe.

It’s an inherently godawful idea; unless you are trying to hoard the requester’s communications for yourself and your clique. In that case it is a great idea.

I've seen two-tiered forums work really well before. It just depends on if the admin can resist the urge to become egoistical with that sort of power.

Seeing as how turker nation was a huge, legendary fail at attempting it (seriously, the fall of TN is going to go down in internet-culture history as one of the biggest fuckups ever. Right up there with the fall of Mothering.com when their mod/admins went crazycakes) I'll never, ever endorse a two-tiered forum ever again.
The room for undetected error is apparently just too big. And the bizarre psychological effect it has on mods/admin is apparently too overwhelming for many otherwise cool people to be immune to.

I once had a job shoveling horse shit. Trust me, it wasn't a lot better. On the other hand...

My favorite part of the article:

On top of what the turkers are paid, Dolores Labs charges a premium that varies from 30% to 200%, depending on how quickly the jobs are done and how much accuracy matters. Amazon takes 10% of workers' wages.

I've literally shoveled tons of shit fresh from a horse's anus and it never made me want to vomit as much as that.

And yeah, Spammy sold her soul to the devil. Here's hoping she managed to get a lot of cash for the site, because the way it's being run now, going there is nothing but a waste of time for most workers. I can't imagine Amazon long continuing to pay her a salary to run a forum that's rapidly emptying out of the work force whose conversations they want to control.

What newbie is going to sign up there when other forums exist that don't deny them access to all useful information, and what long-term user is going to stay when the moderators keep fining them points and returning them to the locked-out status of newbie? Wait a year or two and TN will be a ghost town.

Just FYI for those who have not been around that long. Spammy did NOT start the original TN nor did she have the power there that she does now. Not really sure what happened in between August 2011 (when the new TN started) until now and really don't care to tell you the truth. I just thought it may be a bit of information you all would want.

btw Khalinov.... LOVE the new avatar! ;)

    Whoa. That's damned interesting.

I first joined TN more than two years ago, when it was run in a sane manner. She was firmly in control then and I assumed, based on some of the things she said in her posts, that she always had been.
