Hi Dustin, I noticed that some of your text is not good, because the person or company has an accent or umlaut in their name, and it is replaced by a question mark or is omitted altogether. For example, I was working on a HIT last night where the company name had the word "Österreich" (Austria) in it, and it was listed in your data as "sterreich." I'm sure your search links would provide more meaningful results if you had some way to include these characters correctly, or at least interpret them as an unaccented letter, rather than omitting them entirely.

Usually I am just checking the "no information found" box when the searches bring up non-English results, and leaving a comment. But sometimes I can understand what the page says, or often there will be 9 German pages and 1 English page, so I can get the information from the 1 English page. But if the person or corporation is misspelled due to these character misreadings, then the search results are much worse and there is almost no chance that I can find the correct information.

on the .07 ones where you need to find the current title, if the link doesn't help you and you have to move to the 2nd box, and the search finds you the same information as what is listed at the top, do you just put the info in the 2nd box since the link didn't help you?
    does that make sense?

Dustin is known to a lot of old-timers for his school calendar HITs (http://turkopticon.differenceengines.com/A291YCK0X0R955). Some of us got emails about the posting of these new X8 batches.

If I were not working for myself this weekend, I would have been doing them.

Afternoon (or evening or morning wherever you may be) everyone,

I just wanted to drop by and answer any outstanding questions that may have popped up since I left last night. It doesn't seem there are any though. Ask away if you have any questions, I'll be around this forum for a while.

I also want to be completely transparent with you all and let you know where I am in the project and when you can expect to be paid. I'll be going through all of the data submitted this evening and tomorrow morning to weed out any click-spammers. This was the largest batch I've submitted and was too leniant on the Qualifications required for these HITs, and upon first glance it seems that a good dozen or so workers were submitting poor quality work.

I want to ask those of you that have spent the time and put good honest work on my HITs a question because it is you I do not want to reject and upset, you deserve the pay. I had a dozen or so workers that averaged less than 10 seconds per HIT and returned 98-100% as found. Without diving deeply into the data (and I will), is it in the opinion of those that have submitted quality work that those workers were attempting to cheat the system?

Yes you can just put the info in the 2nd box as long as you also submit the evidence URL with it.

    Hi Dustin,

Nice to see here back again. I was shaken by seeing the TO. I had my soul back by seeing you on this board.

And yes...please check all the data that I have entered and have done it legitimately.

When I couldnt find any data for a person I returned that HIT.

    Thanks

I'm not sure you can go by that. When I was doing them last night, I was clicking the link before I accepted it to see if it was a good one and then if it was, I would accept it and check the box and submit. If it wasn't a good one, I was skipping it. So I was submitting them pretty fast and I wasn't scamming. I was doing the research before accepting the hit so it made it look like I wasn't spending much time on them, I guess. Maybe I was the only one doing this???

Hi Dustin, I appreciate you asking that here. But as jenni said, I was opening the link to check it out before accepting the hit. That goes for the .07 ones which I still don't think took me less than 10 seconds. I only did a couple of the .08 ones. Those could be done a lot faster if it had a valid link.

    Hi Dustin,

I think what may have happened is that those workers were cherry-picking the HITs. Since it is easy to ctrl-F and search for the company name on the linkedin page within a few seconds, they may have only submitted HITs where they were able to find the info quickly. They would return the HITs which looked like they would take more work to complete. This would cause them both to find 98-100% and go through the HITs very quickly.

I'm not sure if this is behavior you want to encourage, but it will happen if you have good-paying HITS, the majority of which can be done in a few seconds. The only way I could see to stop this would be to make each HIT ask for information for 3-4 people, with 3-4x the pay also. This way, they can't just see immediately if it would be profitable for them to do the HIT or return it.

Of course it is also possible that they were just clicking mindlessly in an effort to scam you. I think there is no way to really tell for certain until you delve more deeply into the data which you've received. In either case, I think this problem may have only manifested in those first HITs where they could just check the box and be done with it? It may be that this pattern didn't continue with your subsequent batches of HITs, in which case you've already solved the problem.

For the .08 HITs, I'm not entirely sure you can go by the 10 seconds thing as many of the profiles were valid. I think some people may have been returning the ones they found that weren't valid though. So that may explain why some individuals returned 98-100% as found and averaged less than 10 seconds.

Oh yea, for the .07 HITs I did check the links before accepting the HIT as those were much harder to find.

I didn't know that was "cherry picking". I didn't use control F to look for me, but I did do the ones that I could find easily first. I didn't know that was a problem.

This is why I want to be perfectly transparent with you all because I've never really dug in and been on the other side of the requester/worker relationship before and had never considered using this approach.

The only way I'll know for sure who was quality and who was not is to go through and do a bunch of my own and compare who was wrong (much) more often than the others.

This sounds insulting to me, I am confident in my work and you're making it sound like I am not reliable.

I understand perfectly. And I know it's probably extra work for you, but that does sound like a more fair way to do it.

Btw, I edited my post a bit to let you know that the .08 ones could be done a lot faster than the .07 ones when there was a valid link. Just wanted to clarify. :)

Cherry picking is a problem? You would have to be an idiot not to. When you are competing against 100 workers to do the work, why would you not do the easy hits first and when those are done go back and do the ones that take a little longer.

Also you cant base the quality of work on how long it took to do the hit because on big batches i always find the info before i accept the hit.

Isn't this almost the exact definition of "cherry picking?" Now it could be perfectly alright to do for sure, but I don't think that accurately explaining what's happening should cause anyone any grief.

I don't even know who you are; how can I be insulting you?

Clearly Dustin wants all the HITs done, not just the easy ones. If Dustin's ok with how he set up these HITs and wants to do it again the same way, well that's his choice. If he instead wants to reward those who are doing the more difficult HITs somehow or change the HITs to encourage a different behavior then that's his choice too, the way I see it. I'm just trying to explain the likely behavior which will occur when he sets up a batch of HITs like the .08 ones.

I did that on some of them, too. But, I got a pretty good system going and was doing them pretty quickly. I actually worked on every one that I submitted.

I didn't know about "cherry picking" before this thread. I did use control F, sometimes. Is that wrong? I wanted to be sure I had accurate info. I wasn't watching the clock on how long each hit was taking me.

AGAIN, your implying that because I chose to do the easy ones first, that you are a more accurate worker than me. whatever, I'm done, not going to keep arguing with you.

I don't call it "cherry picking" at all. I did my share of hard ones. I just don't like to return hits if I don't have to. If there were any hits where the information couldn't be found, I just skipped them. When I know the information can be found, I'll do them, hard or not.
