    Hello, everyone.

I am Alexandra Vuyk, a new requester wanting to use MTurk for academic research. This will be the first survey I post under my name, but I have previously worked with Paul Ingram (excellent reviews on TurkOpticon). I wanted to check with you regarding an issue I am having with my survey and how to best handle it. I would really appreciate your perspectives.

The publishing company that makes the test does not allow me to post the survey link on the HIT. Instead, they want me to send a custom link/ password to each worker in a private message. I know that's not typically done in MTurk, so I thought of a few ways of doing that.

One could be to create a HIT in which after you accept you have to contact the requester, and I would send you the survey link/ password when replying to that message. There'd be a code at the end of the survey that you'd paste in the HIT and that'd be it. Of course I would give you enough time allotted for the assignment, to make sure that you have enough time between me sending the link and you finishing it.

A second option would be to post my email on the HIT, people can contact me there to get the survey link/password, and then the same as above. Then again, not sure how people feel about emailing.

Another option would be to assign a qualification; then I would contact all of the workers that have responded to the qualification to send them the custom link. Then, you'd take the survey. At the end of it you'd see the code and you'd paste it on the HIT for which you are now qualified.

What do you think would be the best option? Since you're the one who will be completing it, I am interested in your opinions. Is it even possible to contact workers in the ways I stated? (That was suggested by the publishing company, but none of the requesters I know have ever done it, and I could not find any interesting information online). I want to make this feasible while doing it in the easiest way possible for everyone.

Thank you very much! I appreciate everyone's input.

    Alex

I have only been turking for a couple months so I have not the best one to answer. I'm hoping my bump to this thread will generate more responses. I would suggest you post a "dummy hit" with an explanation of what you are doing. Interested workers could complete the "dummy hit" simply by hitting submit. You could then contact each worker via email through mturk with the link for the survey. As I understand the system that should work. This way you don't have to publicly post your email information and there is not an onerous amount of back and forth emails for workers.

Why is that? Is it because they don't the survey link available to respondents who don't complete a HIT? If that is the case, you can design your HIT so that the survey link only appears once the worker has accepted the HIT. Make it so it does not display in preview mode.

This would violate Amazon's Terms of Service if it requires the worker to disclose their email address.

Not sure what you mean by "all of the workers that responded to the qualification"?

If you are using the GUI, you only contact workers by sending them a bonus payment and attaching a message. If you are using the API, it's no problem to message workers using the NotifyWorker operation.

Thank you for your responses, everyone! I certainly do not want to violate the TOS and thus have settled for a Bonus Payment option. The publishing company did not approve of the first option you suggested, swiftkick, as they wanted a custom link per person. Puts much more work on my end as I will have to send those links one by one, but it was the only solution they considered acceptable and that I thought was not unfair to workers.
I will be posting the HIT soon!
